The Infallibly Polite Alarm Clock

Presenting the infallibly polite speaking alarm clock. Wakes you up in the morning with a polite, almost apologetic message.

Excuse me sir, I’m so sorry to disturb you, but it appears to be morning… very inconvenient, I agree… I believe it is the rotation of the Earth that is to blame, sir.

New ACDSee Pro Beta for Mac – mini review

The day one has waited for with baited breath, the Software one assumed would never be seen again on the Mac, the grand daddy of all image and file managers – ACDSee has arrived for the Mac OSX platform after a gap of nearly ten years.

Ecstatic, enthused, just plain over the top happy to see this App finally make it to the next version (after the non-starter v2.5 back in the day), I downloaded it the first thing this morning on receiving my Invite in the mail. The first impressions, just gobsmacked. They have managed to streamline the Mac version so that the installer DMG is just three MB and footprint is just eight MB. It is blazingly fast in browsing and viewing images. The developers have managed to keep the right-click menu options very contextual and to the point.

One pet peeve though – clicking on an image on the Manage screen (main screen) takes one to the View Screen. To view a full screen image, one must double click it in this screen. One extra step. I imagine the view screen will be improved in the later Betas to include image manip features.

I for one can’t wait for the final version, and do hope that the developers keep the simplicity and the speed that once made ACDSee the best image viewer (and for some File management software) on Windows.

It is fast, it is beautiful, it is simple, and it is here. Go get it.

Yep PDF document management

If you revel in scanning your documents and keeping an e-trace of all your correspondence, Yep is the PDF document management system for you. Yep organizes PDF files and allows you to tag them automatically based on the contents of the documents or define your own tags.

For academic papers, it can download tags and information from Google Scholar as well. The robust search engine allows you to search based on both Tags and contents (where legible). Give it a whirl. I have given Yep total control over my document organization.

10.5.7 and all is well.

Tuesday marked the release of the newest security and incremental patch for Leopard, OS 10.5. I am glad to report that upgrading from Software Update went well on my iPC Hackie.

And a pic to prove the same. Cheers!

Star Trek – the reboot & rebirth

The most widely anticipated and sought after film in the Trekker-dom, this film could not have been built up enough in my head. Rissa will testify that as the days counted down to the 05/08 release, I just have been going nuts – humming the intro music to the Original Series, talking like Shatner, interpretive dances and the like. One would think that after all this anticipation and building up, the movie would have to be a disappointment. But there, my dear reader you’d be completely wrong. The new Star Trek movie just blows the franchise into territory no other movie has gone before. It is slick, fast-paced, exciting, action-packed, thrilling, ribald, in short, nearly all things to all people.

Testament to how much Rissa enjoyed it – she’s humming the intro music as well. And she does not like the Original series at all, or Star Trek for that matter.

Anyway, back to the movie. It was just so exciting to see the characters we grew up with (albeit TOS originally aired nearly 20 years before I was born), played so perfect by the new cast. All through the movie I found myself comparing the mannerisms, the settings, in short everything, to TOS. JJ Abrams did a great job with reimagining the series and even though he has taken a few liberties (including a great development), the movie will be enjoyed by Trekkers far and wide.

Me, I can’t wait till it comes out on Blu-ray! Live long and prosper.
